What is Yoga?

Yoga is a scientific system of physical and mental practices that originated in India more than 3,000 years ago. Its purpose is to help each one of us achieve our highest potential and to experience enduring health and happiness. With a regular yoga practice, we can extend our healthy, productive years far beyond the accepted norm and, at the same time, improve the quality of our lives.
The word yoga comes from Sanskrit meaning “to join or unite” and the word hatha means “sun and moon”. The practice of Hatha Yoga implies a joining or integrating of all aspects of the individual (body, mind and soul) while honoring and balancing the polarities that co-exist within us all. A regular practice integrates physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation. Incorporating these elements into one practice can lead to compassionate self-awareness, while helping us to work through our physical experience to awaken and refine the subtler depths of ourselves. Whether you seek to stretch and strengthen your body or are on the quest to deepen your internal awareness, yoga can bring you home to yourself and your unlimited potential.
A few more benefits to a regular practice:
• Increased flexibility, strength and balance
• Calm mind and less stress
• Detoxify your system
• Lower heart rate and blood pressure
• Improve focus and concentration
• Support a peaceful mind and a healthy body
